San Severino is situated in the Potenza river valley, in Macerata area. Picenum civilitation is magnificently  documented by M. Penna of  Pitino necropolis founds.

Maybe San Severino was founded by Sicilian people or by Sabine people. Common opinion wants San Severino founded by Picenum  population. In about 468 b.C.  Septempeda (the ancient San Severino) was roman municipium. The name of the town was translated  from the saint Bishop Severino. In 545 b.C. San Severino was destroyed by Totila’s troops. People sheltered on the Monte Nero. Today the Town Hall, the Civic Tower and the Church dominate here.

In 1170 it became “comune" of  San Severino: this time was characterised by the struggle with the near towns Camerino, Tolentino, Montecchio and Cingoli. Smeducci dalla Scala governed the town for 80 years until 1426 when Francesco Sforza took their place. In 1445  the Pontificio State subjected San Severino to its rule. The city reached its greatest splendours in economy and art in 1300-1400.
